Make your own skeleton costume

Chattering your teeth, you wander through the streets at night, spreading fear and terror. Apart from this fun, you have nothing left—not even skin or flesh. But as a skeleton, you’ll make a stunning appearance at Halloween. We’ll show you how to ensure you don’t embarrass yourself to the bone with this homemade Halloween costume. You can choose between option A, where you paint your skeleton on, and option B, where the skeleton is applied with adhesive.

This is how you put together your own skeleton costume in just a few steps

For the skeleton costume, you need:

  1. Long-sleeved black top
  2. Long black pants or leggings
  3. Thin black gloves
  4. For version A: white fabric paint, a brush, and cardboard
  5. For version B: aluminum tape
  6. Black and white makeup or skeleton makeup kit

  • Variant A

    With this version, you can wield your paintbrush. For the skeleton, lay your black clothing flat on a table or the floor. Use the white paint to paint the bones onto the fabric.
    To prevent the paint from bleeding through to the back of the clothing, simply place a piece of cardboard in between. Let the paint dry before putting on the costume. If you feel unsure about painting the bones, you can also print out our template and use it as a stencil. Simply mirror the leg and arm bones on each side.

  • Variant B

    This version is glued on. The advantage: The adhesive tape can be easily removed after the party without leaving any residue. Cut bones out of the adhesive tape and stick them onto the clothing. Here, too, our template is a helpful aid.

    Step 1

    Apply white makeup to the face and neck with a sponge. Leave the eye areas and the tip of the nose uncovered.

    Step 2

    Use some black makeup to accentuate the cheekbones. To do this, dab shading beneath the bones. Repeat the same process around the chin. Apply black makeup to the eye area, including the eyebrows, gradually becoming lighter toward the outside. Paint an upside-down black “V” on the tip of the nose. Apply dark shading along the bridge of the nose and on the forehead. Using a fine-tipped pencil, such as an eyeliner pencil, draw teeth over the mouth.

    Step 3

    Starting at the ears, strongly accentuate the cheekbones. This gives the face sharp contours and a bony appearance. Use black makeup to draw the vertebrae along the neck. These can be highlighted with white makeup.

Step 4

If you want gaps in your teeth, color some painted teeth black. Finally, use a black pencil to draw cracks on your face.
