Throughout the series, the story follows several of the 456 people in debt who are kidnapped by a mysterious organization and its leader. Essentially, they voluntarily agree to the procedure, which promises them a large cash prize and an end to their debts. However, they must realize that everyone who loses an individual game must die. Thus, after the first game, “Red Light, Green Light,” only 201 of the original 456 participants remain. These six games are played over the nine episodes of the first season:
1. Red Light, Green Light
The children's game “Red Light, Green Light” involves one person or child standing with their back to everyone else. The others stand behind that game leader at some distance. As the crowd moves toward them, the game leader sings “Red Light, Green Light.” When the singing stops and they turn around, everyone must stand still. Anyone who is still moving is eliminated.
In the Squid Game series, the game supervisor is a giant doll with two cameras for eyes that detect every movement. In addition, moving people are shot in the series. This initially causes mass panic, which is why 255 people die in the very first episode. The group is then disbanded, but reunites because of their continuing debts.
2. Honeycomb
The break between the two abductions in Squid Game is used to provide the missing exposition. Various characters are given more depth as their family histories and personal paths into debt are revealed. Then 187 players are taken back to the island where the games take place.
The second game consists of cutting out shapes (circle, triangle, umbrella, and star) stamped into honeycomb candy (“Dalgona”) using only a sewing needle. The shapes must not break, and too much of their edges must not be removed. If that happens, the person concerned is shot.
3. Tug-of-war
Due to the previous game and a revolt among the players, only 80 of them remain. The survivors compete against one another in groups of ten in a tug-of-war. Each group is on a platform. The losing team is pulled off the platform and dies from the fall from a great height. However, one additional person is eliminated by the game organizers, leaving only 39 participants on the island.
4. Marbles
For the marble game, 19 pairs must be formed, which naturally means that one person cannot play. This player is allowed to skip the fourth game, which naturally creates a conflict. For now, the marble game involves two people competing against each other with their 10 marbles, with each player having to take the other person’s marbles. They have only 30 minutes. Whoever loses dies. In the end, 17 players remain alive.
5. Glass Stepping Stones
The group shrinks to 16 players after one person commits suicide. The remaining participants must now choose a number from 1 to 16 and cross a bridge in the corresponding order. It consists of several glass panels, some made of safe tempered glass and others of thin window glass. Anyone who steps on the wrong panel falls to their death. A total of 13 people die, leaving three for the final game.
6. Squid Game
The eponymous game is explained in a flashback as early as the first episode of the Netflix series Squid Game. In the end, it is played by only two people, the main characters Gi-hun and Sang-woo. The third person had not only been injured since the previous game but was also killed by Sang-woo on the night before the final game.
In the squid game, a stylized squid made up of a square (body), a triangle (neck), and a circle (head) is drawn on the ground. At first, the attacker may move only on one leg, but can move relatively freely. The defender moves along the lines. Once the attacker reaches the neck, both legs may be used. The attacker wins upon reaching the head. The attacker loses if the defender forces them out of the squid.

Players’ clothing – Turquoise tracksuits with numbers
The indebted people who take part in the deadly games in the Netflix series Squid Game all wear a turquoise tracksuit during their stay on the island. Each person’s number, from 1 to 456, is sewn onto it. Number 001 belongs to Oh Il-nam, the old man who is the secret initiator of the games.
The main character of the series, Seong Gi-hun, wears the final number, 456. His old friend, whom he believed to be a wealthy businessman, is also taking part. His name is Cho Sang-woo, and he wears number 218. The North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok has number 067. Other important characters include Jang Deok-su, number 101, and Abdul Ali, number 199.
Guards' Clothing – Red Jumpsuits with Black Masks and Symbols
The guards who supervise the players, prepare the games, and ensure that everything proceeds as planned all wear red hooded jumpsuits. These are already familiar from the equally successful Spanish Netflix series “Money Heist.” In South Korea's Squid Game, the red jumpsuits are complemented by black belts and masks reminiscent of fencing masks.
These black masks each feature a white symbol indicating the guards' hierarchy. The square identifies the “managers,” who are in charge among the guards. The triangle stands for the “soldiers,” who sometimes supervise the games. A circle is worn by the “workers,” who prepare the games and then have to remove and burn the bodies.

The Game Master / Front Man and His Brother
Above everyone is the Front Man, or Game Master, who usually appears wearing a gray-and-black mask and a dark coat. However, in the first episodes, you can also see him from behind without his mask. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that he is the winner of the 2015 games. At the same time, he is the brother of a police officer who manages to smuggle himself onto the island, first disguised as a guard and then as a waiter. The police officer is Hwang Jun-ho. He wants to find his brother after discovering that a mysterious business card bearing the three symbols—a square, triangle, and circle—leads to the games on the island. He found such a business card in his missing brother's room. His brother is the “Front Man,” whose character name is not revealed.
Squid Game Summary
In the currently most successful Netflix series, people in debt initially play for 100,000 won (around €72.67) and are then invited to the actual games. There, an oversized piggy bank fills with more and more money after each game. By the end, 45.6 billion won have been collected in it, which is awarded to the winner as prize money. Converted, this sum is approximately €33,135,480.
Who wins in the end, what happens to the money, and which decisions could usher in the second season can be seen in the Squid Game series on Netflix.
