Zombie walks have been trendy since 2001
The first Zombie Walk to receive widespread recognition and attract large crowds took place in August 2001 in the U.S. city of Sacramento. The first entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest zombie walk up to that point was recorded in Pittsburgh in October 2006. A total of 894 people dressed as zombies took part in the event. The trend eventually spread to Germany in 2007, where such walks were already being organized in several cities. Ten years later, in 2017, there were still several such events, including in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, and Essen. In Essen, there were minor disturbances on the fringes of the event in 2017, although the undead themselves remained peaceful. Anyone wishing to organize such a walk and avoid trouble with the police would be well advised to register the event, as numerous masked—and therefore potentially face-covered—people will be gathering.
