Horror festival with a long tradition
Halloween presumably originated from the Celtic festival of the dead, Samhain, which the Celts celebrated at the end of the harvest season. It only acquired a fixed date—the 31st of October—when the Celts adopted the Gregorian calendar as Christianity spread.
Christians called the festival of the dead “All Hallows Eve” because it took place on the night before All Saints’ Day. Over time, this became Halloween.
It is clearly documented that Irish immigrants brought the festival to America in the 19th century—along with the legend of Jack O., who outwitted the devil and wandered the world with a lantern after his death.
The Irish discovered the pumpkin in America and began carving their lanterns from pumpkins instead of turnips, to drive away the spirits. Others adopted and adapted the rituals. This gave rise to the popular festival that became so important in North America, spread throughout the world, and delights millions of fans of all things spooky.
Creative theme for the horror party
Let your imagination run wild to find great ideas for your Halloween party
. A theme is the perfect foundation for a spooktacular celebration. You can decorate with purpose and choose the music, food and drinks, as well as the entertainment. And choosing a Halloween costume is much easier for your guests. Everything works wonderfully together, making your Halloween party unique.

Here are some inspirations for your Halloween-themed party:
- “Morgue”
- “Haunted Hotel”
- “Graveyard Romance”
- “Zombie Apocalypse”
- “Horror Clinic”
- “Halloween in Hollywood”
- “Ghost Festival”
- “Vampire Ball”
- “Witches’ Night”
These are, of course, just a few suggestions. There are definitely enough themes to offer your guests fascination and
excitement every year.
If you can’t decide, write each idea on a slip of paper, fold it, and put it in a jar. Then you or someone else can draw the winning theme. This draw can also become an attraction during the party. That way, the spooky theme of next year’s Halloween is already decided a year in advance—plenty of time to prepare.
Spooky ideas for the Halloween atmosphere
Only spooky decorations give the themed party its Halloween atmosphere. In no time, the party cellar becomes a musty crypt, the bathroom a haunted cave, and the garden a spooky cemetery.

Dim lighting
Bright lighting doesn’t create a spooky atmosphere. The soft glow of candles works best, as it casts lively shadows and plays with illusions. However, they don’t have to be real. If you want to play it safe, choose their electric counterparts.
For a horror hospital theme, cool light colors and indirect lighting are naturally more suitable. The same applies here: less lighting is more. Dim the lights and stimulate the imagination in this way.
Terrifying decorations
Depending on the theme, the venue can be filled with a veritable assortment of spooky decorations.
Turn the tables—more is better. Monstrous spider webs and their inhabitants hang from lamps and walls, rats swarm around the buffet, and bats flutter at the window. These are just a few examples of the many possibilities.
A zombie theme is not complete without severed body parts and tombstones. Vampires love plenty of blood. And for the ultimate scare, you can use animated Halloween decorations.

The Dance of Death
A party isn’t complete without music. But which songs will get guests onto the dance floor? Here are a few examples of popular Halloween songs:
- Thriller – Micheal Jackson
- This Is Halloween – Marilyn Manson
- Zombie – The Cranberries
- Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell
- Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) – Backstreet Boys
- Time Warp – Little Nell, Patricia Quinn, Richard O’Brien
- Midnight City – M83
- Jeepers Creepers – Paul Whiteman and His Swing Wing
Ideas for the children's Halloween party
When celebrating Halloween with children, having fun is the priority. Consider the age of the little ghosts. With a few adjustments, you can quickly create a child-friendly spooky party. Later, you can add a little more of a fright factor if the children or teenagers enjoy it.
However, you do not have to keep everything spooky away from the children. Many little ones enjoy a ghostly thrill. But leave the adults-only decorations in the cupboard.
Beforehand, you can also make some of the party decorations yourself together with your children. You will spend a wonderful time together, and the anticipation of Halloween will grow even more.
An absolute highlight for children: “Trick or Treat”, known in German as “Sweets or Treats”. In this tradition, children dressed up in costumes go from house to house and use the familiar phrase to ask for some treats. If your little ones are still very young, it is best to go with them.
