Medieval Costumes of Famous People
A hero of the Middle Ages was the famous hero Robin Hood. His appearance in the natural colors green and brown is available from us as both a men’s and women’s costume. From the same era came the crusader and English King Richard the Lionheart, who is also a very popular character among carnival enthusiasts.
Henry Tudor, the fortune teller Nostradamus, and the splendid Borgia pope are further roles in which medieval enthusiasts feel right at home. Depending on the character, various accessories such as wigs or beards may be necessary. In the case of the pope or a queen, jewelry, various rings, and crowns may also be needed.
Medieval Costumes: Peasants, Knights, and Maidens
The humble peasant is just as much a symbol of the Middle Ages as the learned monks with their enormous crosses, characteristic monk’s hairstyles, and robes. The most popular men’s costume for this theme is the medieval knight. The costume absolutely requires a sword and either armor or at least a leather jerkin. A somewhat different form of warrior is represented by medieval costumes styled after the Germanic peoples or Vikings, with an emphasis on a wild and natural appearance. Villainous characters can be found in the form of bandits and black-armored robber knights, or even witches.
The classic medieval women’s costume consists of a dress, an appropriate hairstyle, and, if applicable, jewelry. This depends on whether the woman appears as a peasant and maidservant, or as a queen, princess, or noblewoman. Those who prefer something a little more modern can find inspiration in a later, partly fictional era and take a look at our Victorian steampunk section.
