The “Billy” Puppet from Jigsaw in the Saw Films

John Kramer is the psychopathic serial killer in the Saw film series. His nickname is Jigsaw, which is an ambiguous reference to the way he treats his victims. The jigsaw is not only used as a means of escape in some torture scenarios—and therefore as an instrument of torture—but also alludes to a jigsaw puzzle. In Saw, Jigsaw does not always show himself to his victims; this only happens explicitly in the first film. Later, the “Billy” puppet appears in video recordings and announces the respective horrors awaiting the kidnapped victims. The Saw puppet often begins this with “I want to play a game!” or “I would like to play a game!”.

The Pig Mask as Another Defining Feature in Saw

The ventriloquist-style puppet with its hinged mouth, white face, and red spirals on its cheeks is widely known. Less firmly rooted in popular culture, but familiar to fans of the Saw film series, is the disguise worn by Jigsaw and his accomplices in the form of a pig mask. When Jigsaw or his helpers abduct their victims, they wear the pig mask as an ambiguous symbol. Throughout the now nine films (Saw through Saw VI, Saw 3D, Jigsaw, and Saw: Spiral), the individual meanings are explained. Through flashbacks and narration, it becomes clear what the Saw puppet and pig mask represent.

Saw Costumes – Jigsaw’s Puppet and the Pig

Both the puppet, which is often depicted riding a tricycle, and the pig refer to John Kramer’s son, the protagonist of Saw. He was never born because he and his mother died because of a heroin-addicted man who later became Jigsaw’s first victim. The puppet that later initiates the torture sequences known as the “games” had been built by John Kramer for his son. The pig refers to the son’s planned year of birth, which was supposed to be the Year of the Pig in Chinese astrology. Both elements reveal Jigsaw’s motives: revenge and vigilante justice.
